Top 4 Kayak Fishing Spots in the UK

Looking for a new local fishing spot? We’ve found the top 4 kayak fishing spots in the UK!

1. Derwent Water (Lake District)

Expect to catch fish that weigh over 20lb in Derwent Water! The most common fish here is Pike however trout, perch and roach can also be found. If you are fishing for trout, the best time to visit is at the start of the season during the mayfly hatch in June.

Access for kayak fisherman is good along the east shore, but one thing to note is that it can get very busy with tourists in the summer. For a quiet fishing spot in hotter months the west shore is a good choice, however, there is a lack of nearby parking. Unless you fancy carrying your kayak for long walks we’d recommend investing in one of our C-Tug Kayak Carts when fishing on the west shore.

Tip for fishing these waters:

In the summer most of the fish gather around shallow areas where fly fishing and lure can be great methods for a good catch.

During the winter months using a kayak provides a great advantage as all the fish move into the middle in deeper areas.

2. River Ouse (North Yorkshire)

This river is 129 miles long making it the sixth longest river in the UK. Here you will find trout, barbel, perch, pike, chub, roach, zander and eels.

If you are a beginner fishing on this river, Basstastic have created a Beginners Guide to Fishing Baits. Worth a read for a few top tips on targeting different species of fish.

Due to the size of this river it’s always a good idea to check which areas you will be heading through as rod licence costs vary between the location.

3. Loch Ken (Galloway)

Loch Ken is a freshwater loch in the county of Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland that is rich with pike, trout, bream, roach and perch.

Fancy a bit of competition? Then you’re in luck! A freshwater fishing competition is held here every year during October. As an added bonus any children aged 10 and younger can come along for free.

4. Rutland Reservoir

One of the largest man made lakes in Western Europe and considered to be the best Kayak fishing spot in the UK.

Trout in these waters be as big as 15lb and pike can be as large as 40lb. This is certainly a top spot to score that trophy fish.

The reservoir attracts everyone from casual fisherman to top level fishing competitors. During October 2017 the Anglian Water Airflow International was held here over 2 days.
