Chris Castro

Who introduced you to the outdoors lifestyle?

As far back as I can remember that would have to be my father.  He was a recreational outdoorsman, and the one thing that stood out to me was the effect it had on him after escaping day to day life.

What are your top 3 loves in the outdoors?

Fishing Exlopring & Hunting

What boat, kayak or other do you use for your outdoor adventures?

I have two kayaks that I feel can handle just about most situations. The Trident 15, and the Predator PDL. With the help of a small kayak trailer and my Toyota Tundra, I can pretty much get just about anywhere.

What are your favourite brands of gear that you use?

So, filming and rigging is very critical and go hand in hand for me.  Railblaza and Yakgear components are really the bulk of what I carry in my cockpit. From paddle leashes, rod holders, to camera booms; they provide a simple one-two punch of all the accessories I need.

How did you get into fishing?

Fishing has been a calling even well before I gained experience.  As strange as it may sound, I use to rent fishing VHF tapes out the local library.  Many libraries back then would have a small section of fishing videos, and for some unknown reason, I was drawn to them.  During my early years, my parents were trying to finish college so it was tough to get out.  After college, we moved around a lot, so the opportunity always slipped.  As I grew older fishing came on strong, and eventually finding kayak fishing to change my life.

Where is your favourite place to fish, and for what species?

PINS (Padre Island National Seashore) is a special place for me.  It’s got a little of everything from rigs, rocks, to hidden structure.  Big kingfish would be my favourite species to roam these waters amongst other highly sought-after species.

What’s your bucket list fishing trip?

Any trip that puts me in range to fight and leader a marlin is a bucket list trip.
